Background

Get SET (Science, Engineering, and Technology) is an outreach program sponsored by The Santa Clara Valley section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE-SCV). The Get SET Program is a four-year mentoring program that reaches out to girls in high school who are from groups typically under-represented in engineering and computer science. The program provides these young women with support and encouragement to pursue careers in science and math. The program is grounded in the tenet that girls are steered away from these pursuits by many influences, including schools, media, families and societal norms. Get SET is designed to counter these influences and enrich the educational experience of adolescent girls.

SWE-SCV initiated Get SET in 1992 as a follow on to the Higher Education Outreach Program. That program was extremely effective in encouraging girls to stay in math and science classes throughout high school. SWE-SCV decided to continue to build on the valuable lessons we learned so that we could reach more girls on an ongoing basis.

Activities

Get SET provides rewarding experiences and opportunities for both our girls and our volunteers!

Summer Week

Summer Week is a one-week, hands-on science and math camp held at local universities and junior colleges where girls work in small teams with professional women engineers and volunteers. The goal of Summer Week is to teach engineering concepts through hands-on workshops on topics such as: dissecting bikes, building radios or creating a web page. The young women also have the incredible opportunity to meet many role models, e.g. the over 60 women engineers who volunteer during Summer Week.

On-Going Science, Math and Leadership Opportunities

Get SET collaborates with other organizations to provide girls with a myriad of growth opportunities, including attendance at leadership and science conferences.  Get SET participants are also encouraged to be leaders in the planning of Summer Week activities. Girls are encouraged to attend college and are given college information and applications, scholarship information, campus tours and funds for their SAT/Achievement test fees.

Our Funders

Get SET has attracted wonderful sponsors and a variety of types of sponsorship.  For information on how you can help support the GetSET Program you can email swegs@getset.org

Our Volunteers

GetSET offers volunteers a rewarding opportunity to guide and counsel young women with career choices. The Society for Women Engineers (SWE) is making a difference in the lives of young girls by helping to mold great minds and by preparing them for promising futures in science and engineering.

Our Girls

Get SET offers girls the opportunity to develop into key members of the work force of the 21st century. Current statistics indicate that there is continuing need for programs like Get SET which encourage young women to be self confident in their knowledge of engineering and computer science concepts.  Let us share with you some highlights of the Get SET program in 1997:

Each year we seek a new group of participants. We enroll a total of 30 eighth grade girls from local schools to the program. Our primary requirement is that the girl has an interest in math and science; grades and financial considerations are not important.
